How to Reverse Kidney Disease

Kidneys are vital organs; they help remove waste products from the blood. Sometimes, unfortunately, this filtering system breaks down and the kidneys lose their ability to remove waste products. As a result, toxins build up and poison our blood. The consequences can be severe.

Before we delve a little deeper, let's get some basic information about kidney disease.

Who gets kidney disease?

Although most people with diabetes are likely to have kidney disease, other factors such as genetics, blood pressure and blood sugar control do also play a role. So, the better a person keeps blood pressure and diabetes under control, the lower the chances of kidney disease developing.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms, though not specific, may range from fluid buildup, loss of sleep, stomach upset and poor appetite to difficulty concentrating. It is, therefore, essential to see your physician regularly. The doctor can check blood (for waste products), urine (for protein) and blood pressure, among other complications.

How to prevent kidney diseases

Exercise and eat healthy

Lack of exercising and eating junk food may lead to obesity, a condition that interferes with insulin levels and increases your blood glucose levels. If the levels of glucose in the blood remain high for a long duration of time, your kidneys may get damaged.

It is therefore important to reduce unhealthy fats, processed or refined flour and alcohol. In addition, getting at least 30 minutes of exercises at least five days a week will help prevent obesity. It does not have to be a high-performance exercise; light jogging, brisk walking or dancing can help prevent diabetes.

Here are some essential fruits that help keep the kidneys healthy.

· Lemon

These fruits are high in citrate and potassium, which may help in dissolving certain kinds of kidney stones especially those formed by excess uric acid deposits. Taking a glass of lemon water in the morning helps flush waste from your tissues.

· Grape seed extract

It is believed that the extract contains antioxidants which provide the kidneys with an anti-inflammatory agent. This agent, it's believed, assists in reversing kidney disease.

· Cherry juice

This juice has high potassium and may help kidney function and prevents stone formation. As a matter of fact, potassium together with sodium and calcium helps regulate blood pressure in the body and keep the kidneys healthy. If you are suffering from kidney disease, unfortunately, you may not need increased potassium. Always consult your doctor before using foods to treat serious diseases.

A good combination of vegetable juices helps neutralize the body's acids and helps dissolve clumps that may form kidney stones.

Control high blood pressure

High blood pressure may cause damage and narrowing of the blood vessels thus affecting the nephrons of the kidneys as well as other organs such as the heart. Blood pressure influences the rate at which the disease progresses; even a slight increase in blood pressure can worsen your kidney disease.

Healthy eating and exercising helps to control high blood pressure. Also include more vegetables, poultry, nuts, fish and whole grains, but reduce caffeine and sodium intake in your diet. Avoiding tobacco, eating less salt and losing weight are other ways to reduce your blood pressure.

Always consult your doctor for advice on these and other treatment options.

Fatty Liver Disease Treatment - What You Should Know

Fatty liver disease is a condition that nearly 20% of Americans suffer from. However, even though this is a common disease, many people, even some that have been diagnosed with it are unaware of the causes and fatty liver disease treatment options. Fatty liver disease is a fairly broad term that covers multiple conditions that all have one base similarity, the collection of fatty deposits on the liver.

Alcohol is one of the most common causes for fatty liver disease. The treatment options vary depending on the existing damage that has been don to the liver, other medical conditions, medications already taken by the patient and even lifestyle of the individual.

Another cause of this disease is obesity and the fast elimination of excess weight; such as through a surgical procedure. There are often other medical conditions that can contribute to the FLD and increase its progression. Which makes it essential that the other medical conditions are properly and efficiently treated...

Some of the most documented symptoms of FLD are:

- fatigue

- inability to lose weight

- jaundice

- nausea

- obesity

- fever

- loss of memory

- loss of appetite

- abdominal discomfort

- flatulence

- dry mouth

- darker than normal urine

- swelling in the abdominal area

Research your options for treating your condition. If you prefer to stay away from the typical treatment methods and take advantage of medications that can be prescribed for you, you can ask your doctor for a treatment regimen that you feel more comfortable with. Your doctor should answer all of your questions or send you to another doctor that is more experienced in your desired treatment method. Make sure you are comfortable with the treatment plan given to you by your medical care provider, ask any and all questions and do not allow your treatment to be derailed because of your lack of informed decision making.

What is your fatty liver disease treatment options? The answer to this question might surprise you. The treatment plan has to include treating your other medical conditions first and foremost. Once the underlying cause for your disease has been pin pointed and treated you will be reducing the effects on your liver. You can do this by losing the excess weight you have been carrying around, start exercising regularly and consistently, eat healthier, eliminate all toxins you are putting into your body.

What is Dementia, Alzheimer's and Pick's Disease

What is dementia? The short answer is that it is any deterioration of the brain that causes regression into perhaps a childlike or unpredictable state of mind. This article will present a laymans observations of the condition.

1. Overview:

Dementia can be caused by a number of different diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Pick's disease or simply aging. This article will mainly cover Pick's disease, as close observance was made of a patient suffering from this condition, with the observations starting 10 years before the onset of the disease, when the patient was in perfect health, and continuing until his death. Many of the symptoms and behaviour caused by the disease are similar across all types of dementia.

2. Physical causes and effects.

Pick's disease is a deterioration of the frontal lobe of the brain. Alzheimer's apparently affects the back of the brain. Certain areas of the brain seem to break down into a fluid. This is a process, during which more and more of the brain's functions are impaired or destroyed. Depending on the individual, this could first affect his emotions, memory and inhibitions, and as the disease progresses, it starts affecting the involuntary functions such as bladder, renal, breathing, heart and so on. Eventually adult nappies have to be worn. Weight gain can occur unless his eating is closely controlled, but in a home situation this can be almost impossible. Even with controlled eating, the changes in the body also cause weight gain.

3. Early symptoms.

Short term memory loss is an early symptom, coupled with out of character behaviour. May take twice as long to go to the store up the road. A man gives the impression of "having an affair" as he may disappear for quite a few hours and have no explanation as to where he was. Will find it gradually more difficult to tackle familiar everyday tasks like fixing a kettle or sorting out the garden.

4. Behavioural changes.

Pick's disease is closely related to Alzheimer's disease, but with slightly differing symptoms. The patient is usually less aggressive. He regresses to childlike behaviour where he likes to "go for a ride," finds boyish things like big buses and trains fascinating. he has no sense of responsibility and does not worry about finances or traffic fines. Driving rapidly deteriorates to a dangerous and reckless level. Spends money with gay abandon. Chats up ladies with no inhibitions, even though married. Totally forgets anniversaries and shows no interest in them. Has little or no emotions, especially loving or kind acts towards his spouse, but is otherwise happy and carefree. Will wander off and get lost within minutes if not watched. Develops compulsive behaviour: the patient incessantly combed his hair.

5. How to care for the patient.

The patient must, of course, be treated with respect, but since they are childlike, a very firm approach must be used towards them. They must be told in no uncertain terms what to do, and the threat of removal of privileges seems to help in controlling their behaviour. They must be kept busy with things that they can do, such as polishing shoes, making beds, painting - one needs to try them with a task and see how they manage, bearing in mind that their abilities are constantly changing with time. Don't let them drive if they are unable to.

6. Outlook.

Sufferers of Pick's disease usually live for 4 to 7 years after diagnosis. Alzheimer patients can live for up to 28 years after diagnosis. If the cause is simply aging, it appears to shorten the lifespan, but it's hard to tell if it is the dementia or simply the natural course of old age. Great strides have been made in the medication available to treat these diseases, and a large amount of government money has been allocated to research.

5. Help and Support groups for carers.

As this sort of disease is quite widespread and common, there are numerous support groups and helpers, wherever you may live. Often a search of the phone book or a Google search will yield results. Assistance is definitely needed, as the person caring for a patient of this nature can become totally exhausted, especially as the disease can last for 10 or 15 years. There are institutions where the patient can go for the day, where they are cared for and given things to do to occupy them happily. This gives the carer time to recover and gather their thoughts, and take care of themselves.

Dementia is quite a sad situation, as loved ones feel they have "lost" their family member even though he is still with them. But there are lighter moments, and with the help of friends, family and support groups, the burden is a lot lighter. Life does go on!

Signs, Symptoms and Treatments of Acute Renal (Kidney) Failure - ARF

The clinical picture depends upon underlying causes, like acute GN (allergic disorder of kidneys), sudden acute rise in blood pressure (malignant hypertension), or it may be a case of acute infection of the kidneys (pyelonephritis), or an advanced case of dehydration (due to repeated vomiting, diarrhoea, etc.), or due to loss of blood as a result of sudden bleeding, or due to marked hypotension, i.e. fall in blood pressure in a case of heart attack, or acute kidney failure may manifest itself due to the use of toxic drugs, as explained earlier. Hence, the signs and symptoms vary with the basic disease the patient is suffering from.

Immediate treatment should be started whenever any of the above diseases/conditions occur, and a close watch should be kept on the daily output of urine. A general awareness is required on the part of everyone that whenever a kidney patient starts passing less urine, he/she should consider that the function of the kidneys is markedly threatened, and therefore, it is advisable that the amount of urine passed each day should be collected and measured. It may seem very simple, but since collection of 24-hour urine is somewhat cumbersome and distasteful, people may not like to follow it. As a result, excretion of urine goes on reducing day by day, till it becomes . around 400 ml, and at this volume of urine, kidney failure occurs. Even serum creatinine or blood urea does not run parallel to the initial damage the kidneys. Hence, it is vital to keep a close watch on the volume of the daily output of urine, in the various circumstances mentioned above, which are responsible for sudden kidney damage/failure.

Initially, during the first week of the disease, the signs and symtoms are of the primary disease, i.e. acute GN, dehydration, etc., and the patient starts passing less urine than normal. If the condition remains undetected, i.e. specific attention is not paid, or the patient does not report to his physician about the low output of urine, the vital period for saving the kidneys is wasted, and the volume of urine passed daily goes ondecreasing till it becomes less than 400 ml, when an acute kidney failure is said to have been initiated. Due to the retention of water, swelling of the face and other parts of body may develop. The patient will have marked symptoms of nausea/ vomiting, drowsiness and convulsions, and even death may occur. Both blood urea and serum creatinine will be raised.

Treatment

The patient should be treated in a hospital. Besides urgent measures, the underlying cause of the ARF should be simultaneously looked into. If blood pressure is markedly elevated, it should be lowered with suitable drugs. If infection is the sole reason, it needs to be treated on the lines of UTI, already discussed. And, if there is some obstruction in the urinary tract, say, as a result of an enlarged prostate, etc., it should be immediately dealt with in the hospital, by a team of doctors, including both physicians and surgeons. In case of loss of fluids/blood, measures should be taken accordingly. If drugs are the causative factors, they ought to be stopped immediately.

Symptoms Of Autoimmune Thyroid Disorders

An autoimmune disease refers to a condition where in the body's defense mechanism cannot distinguish between the cells and tissues of the body and foreign cells. As a result the defense mechanism attacks the body's tissues and cells. When it comes to autoimmune thyroid disorders, the antibodies in the body attack the thyroid gland. This can result in Grave's disease, Hashimoto's thyroiditis or Hashitoxicosis.

Autoimmune thyroid disease has a genetic factor linked to it and researchers believe that the mutated genes are inherited. Also, environmental factors play a big role in triggering the disease in people who are predisposed to it.

In Grave's disease, the thyroid gland produces more quantity of thyroid hormones after the gland gets stimulated by an antibody known as thyrotropin receptor antibody (TRAb). This is a kind hyperthyroidism that causes excessive perspiration, anxiety, sensitivity to heat, sleeping problems, rapid heart beat, fatigue, tremors of the hands and finger, enlarged thyroid gland, frequently going to the toilet, and losing weight even though a person is eating normally. In women, Grave's disease can lead to menstrual problems. A person is also at a risk of developing eye problems known as Grave's ophthalmopathy which causes the eyeballs to bulge out.

Hashimoto's thyroiditis causes a swelling of the thyroid gland due to the attack by the antibodies. This results in the gland producing less quantities of thyroid hormone. Usually, if there is a family history of this autoimmune disorder, a person has a higher chance of developing it. At times, the disorder can also be brought by a bacterial or viral infection. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is a kind of hypothyroidism and the some of the symptoms are enlarged thyroid gland (goiter), being sensitive to cold, ache in the muscles, depression, fatigue, gaining weight without intention, puffiness of the face, dryness of the skin and hoarse voice.

Hashitoxicosis is transient thyroid disorder that is prevalent among people suffering from Hashimoto's thyroiditis. In this can the person suffers from episodes of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism at the same time. The episodes occur due to the antibodies, namely thyroglobulin and thyroid peroxidase, attacking the follicles of the thyroid gland. When the follicles are attacked, the hormones stored in the gland get released into the bloodstream causing hyperthyroidism symptoms, while the other antibodies attack the thyroid gland causing a suppression of the thyroid gland. Hence, when this occurs, the person will have symptoms of both kinds of thyroid diseases at the same time.

Do You Suffer From Insomnia? Hashimotos, Thyroid Disease And Links To Sleeplessness

I have an underactive thyroid which was diagnosed shortly after the birth of my second child about 8 years ago. Hypothyroidism is an extremely common ailment, more usually amongst women rather than men, & often does strike after childbirth. My underactive thyroid is a result of Hashimotos Thyroiditis, where my own body basically attacks the thyroid gland, resulting in me having to take levothyroxine tablets to control my metabolism.

If you're reading this the chances are that you'll be aware of the more usual underactive thyroid problems, e.g. weight increase, hair loss, fatigue, gravelly voice, thickening skin, intolerance to cold, but you may be, like me, unaware of the link to insomnia.

Recently I've been having trouble sleeping, if I wake up in the night there is just no way I can get back to sleep, heart palpitations & what I can only describe as mild anxiety attacks about stupid things (when I'm lying in my bed unable to sleep!).

Now, I was thinking that perhaps I was overdosing on thyroxine & my thyroid was going into overdrive, hence the palpitations, sleeplessness, etc, but I reasoned if this was the case then I would be experiencing hyperthyroid symptoms & I wasn't losing any weight at all, alas! Interestingly, what I've found out is that in some cases of hypothyroidism sufferers have what is termed a thyroiditis attack, the common symptoms of which are anxiety, panic attacks, heart palpitations, swelling in the thyroid area, problems swallowing, and frequently, problems sleeping.

Also, thyroiditis attacks classically happen during the night!

The thyroid itself become inflamed & pain can result too.

Suggested treatments are taking ibuprofen as a pain killer & for its anti-inflammatory properties & calcium/magnesium for sedative effects before going to bed which I have been trialling for the last few weeks to gauge efficacy. I'll be posting the results on my blog.

Gallstones Cause Varicose Veins, Problems of The Heart, Spleen, Hormones, Circulation And Congestion

Gallstones in the liver may lead to poor circulation, enlargement of the heart and spleen, varicose veins, congested lymph vessels, and hormone imbalances. When gallstones have grown large enough to seriously distort the structural framework of the lobules (units) of the liver, blood flow through the liver becomes increasingly difficult. This not only raises the venous blood pressure in the liver, but also raises it in all the organs and areas of the body that drain used blood through their respective veins into the liver's portal vein. Restricted blood flow in that portal vein causes congestion, particularly in the spleen, stomach, esophagus, pancreas, gallbladder, and small and large intestines. This can lead to an enlargement of these organs, to a reduction of their ability to remove cellular waste products, and to a clogging of their respective veins.

A varicose vein is one that is so dilated that the valves do not sufficiently close to prevent blood from flowing backward. Sustained pressure on the veins at the junction of the rectum and anus in the large intestine leads to the development of hemorrhoids, a type of varicose vein. Other common sites of varicose veins are the legs, the esophagus, and the scrotum. Dilation of veins and venules (small veins) can occur anywhere in the body. It always indicates an obstruction of blood flow.

Prescribed by doctors in Germany as a highly successful alternative to surgery for varicose veins, the herbal remedy horse chestnut seed, or conkers, is very effective in the treatment of 'heavy legs', hemorrhoids, and cramps. In combination with cleansing of the liver, colon, and kidneys, conkers can lead to complete recovery.

Poor blood flow through the liver always affects the heart. When the organs of the digestive system become weakened by an increase in venous pressure, they become congested and begin to accumulate harmful waste, including debris from cells that have been broken down. The spleen becomes enlarged while it is dealing with the extra workload associated with removing damaged or worn-out blood cells. This further slows blood circulation to and from the organs of the digestive system, which stresses the heart, raises blood pressure, and injures blood vessels. The right half of the heart, which receives venous blood via the inferior vena cava from the liver and all other parts below the lungs, becomes overloaded with toxic, sometimes infectious, material. This eventually causes enlargement, and possibly infection, of the right side of the heart.

Almost all types of heart disease have one thing in common: blood flow is being obstructed. But blood circulation does not become disrupted easily. It must be preceded by a major congestion of the bile ducts in the liver. Gallstones obstructing the bile ducts dramatically reduce or cut off the blood supply to the liver cells. Reduced blood flow through the liver affects the blood flow in the entire body, which, in turn, has a detrimental effect on the lymphatic system.

The lymphatic system, which is closely linked with the immune system, helps to clear the body of harmful metabolic waste products, foreign material, and cell debris. All cells release metabolic waste products into, and take up nutrients from, a surrounding solution, called extracellular fluid or connective tissue. The degree of nourishment and efficiency of the cells depends on how swiftly and completely waste material is removed from the extracellular fluid. Since most waste products cannot pass directly into the blood for excretion, they accumulate in the extracellular fluid until they are removed and detoxified by the lymphatic system. The potentially harmful material is filtered and neutralized by lymph nodes that are strategically located throughout the body. One of the key functions of the lymphatic system is to keep the extracellular fluid clear of toxic substances, which makes this a system of utmost importance.

Poor circulation of blood in the body causes an overload of foreign, harmful waste matter in the extracellular tissues and, consequently, in the lymph vessels and lymph nodes as well. When lymph drainage slows down or becomes obstructed, the thymus gland, tonsils, and spleen start to deteriorate quite rapidly. These organs form an important part of the body's system of purification and immunity. In addition, microbes harbored in gallstones can be a constant source of recurring infection in the body, which may render the lymphatic and immune systems ineffective against more serious infections, such as infectious mononucleosis, measles, typhoid fever, tuberculosis, syphilis, and the like.

Owing to restricted bile flow in the liver and gallbladder, the small intestine is restricted in its capacity to digest food properly. This permits substantial amounts of waste matter and poisonous substances, such as cadaverines and putrescines (breakdown products of putrefied food), to seep into the lymphatic ducts. These toxins, along with fats and proteins, enter the body's largest lymph vessel, the thoracic duct,at the cysterna chyli. The cysterna chyli are dilated lymph vessels in the shape of sacks, situated in front of the first two lumbar vertebrae at the level of the belly button.

Toxins, antigens, and undigested proteins from animal sources, including fish, meat, eggs, and dairy foods, as well as leaked plasma proteins, cause these lymph sacks to swell and become inflamed. When the cells of an animal become damaged or die, which happens seconds after it is killed, its protein structures are broken down by cellular enzymes. These so-called 'degenerate' proteins are useless for the body, and they become harmful unless they are promptly removed by the lymphatic system. Their presence usually invites enhanced microbial activity. Viruses, fungi, and bacteria feed on the pooled wastes. In some cases, allergic reactions occur.

When the cysterna chyli(lymph sacks) are overtaxed and congested, the lymphatic system is no longer able to sufficiently remove even the body's own degenerate proteins (from worn-out cells). This results in lymph edema. While lying on the back, existing lymph edema can be felt as hard knots, sometimes as large as a fist, in the area of the belly button. These 'rocks' are a major cause of middle and low back pain and abdominal swelling, and, in fact, of most symptoms of ill health. Many people who have grown a 'tummy' consider this abdominal extension to be just a harmless nuisance or a natural part of aging. They don't realize that they are breeding a living 'time bomb' that may go off some day and injure vital parts of the body. Anyone with a bloated abdomen suffers from major lymph congestion.

Some 80 percent of the lymphatic system is associated with the intestines, making this area of the body the largest center of immune activity. This is no coincidence. The part of the body where most disease-causing agents are combated or generated is, in fact, the intestinal tract. Any lymphedema, or other kind of obstruction in this important part of the lymphatic system, can lead to potentially serious complications elsewhere in the body.

Wherever a lymphduct is obstructed, lymph has also accumulated at some distance from the obstruction. Consequently, the lymph nodeslocated in such an area can no longer adequately neutralize or detoxify the following things: dead and live phagocytes and their ingested microbes, worn-out tissue cells, cells damaged by disease, products of fermentation, pesticides in food, toxic antibodies contained in most plant foods, inhaled or otherwise ingested chemical particles, cells from malignant tumors, and the millions of cancer cells every healthy person generates each day. Incomplete destruction of these things can cause these lymph nodes to become inflamed, enlarged, and congested with blood. Infected material may enter the bloodstream, causing septic poisoning and acute illnesses. In most cases, though, the lymph blockage occurs slowly, without any symptoms other than swelling of the abdomen, hands, arms, feet, or ankles, or sometimes puffiness in the face and eyes. This is often referred to as 'water retention', a major precursor of chronic illness.

Continuous lymphatic obstruction usually leads to chronic health problems. Almost every chronic illness results from congestion in the cysterna chyli. Eventually, the thoracic duct, which drains the cysterna chyli, is overburdened by the constant influx of toxic material and becomes clogged up, too. The thoracic duct is linked with numerous other lymph ducts that empty their waste into the thoracic 'sewer canal'.

Since the thoracic duct has to remove nearly 85 percent of the body's daily-generated cellular waste and other potentially hazardous material, a blockage there causes backing up of waste into other, more distant parts of the body.

When the daily-generated metabolic waste and cellular debris are not removed from an area in the body for a certain length of time, symptoms of disease start to manifest. The following are but a few typical examples of illness indicators that result directly from chronic, localized lymph congestion:

Obesity, cysts in the uterus or ovaries, enlargement of the prostate gland, rheumatism in the joints, enlargement of the left half of the heart, congestive heart failure, congested bronchi and lungs, swelling or enlargement of the neck area, stiffness in the neck and shoulders, backaches, headaches, migraines, dizziness, vertigo, ringing in the ears, earaches, deafness, dandruff, frequent colds, sinusitis, hay fever, certain types of asthma, thyroid enlargement, eye diseases, poor vision, swelling in the breasts, breast cancer, kidney problems, lower back pains, swelling of the legs and ankles, scoliosis, brain disorders, memory loss, stomach trouble, enlarged spleen, irritable bowel syndrome, hernia, polyps in the colon, and others.

The thoracic duct typically empties its detoxified waste contents into the left subclavian vein at the root of the neck. This vein enters the superior vena cava, which leads straight into the heart. In addition to blocking proper lymph drainage from the various organs or parts of the body, congestion in the cysterna chyli and thoraciuct permits toxic materials to be passed into the heart and heart arteries. This unduly stresses the heart. It also allows these toxins and disease-causing agents to enter the general circulation and spread to other parts of the body. Hardly a disease can be named that is not caused by lymphatic obstruction. Lymph blockage, in most cases, has its origin in a congested liver. In the extreme eventuality, lymphomaor cancer of the lymph may result, of which Hodgkin's disease is the most common type.

When the circulatory system begins to malfunction because of gallstones in the liver, the endocrine system starts to be affected as well. The endocrine glands produce hormones that pass directly from the glandular cells into the bloodstream, where they influence bodily activity, growth, and nutrition. The glands most often affected by congestion are the thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal cortex, ovaries, and testes. A more severely disrupted circulatory function leads to imbalanced hormone secretions by the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas and the pineal and pituitary glands. Blood congestion, which is characterized by the thickening of the blood, prevents hormones from reaching their target places in the body in sufficient amounts and on time. Consequently, the glands go into hypersecretion (overproduction) of hormones.

When lymph drainage from the glands is inefficient, the glands themselves become congested. This brings about hyposecretion (lack) of hormones. Diseases related to imbalances of the thyroid gland include toxic goiter, Graves' disease, cretinism, myxoedema, tumors of the thyroid, hypoparathyroidism. Thyroid disorders can also reduce calcium absorption and cause cataracts,as well as behavioral disorders and dementia.Poor calcium absorption, alone, is responsible for numerous diseases, including osteoporosis (loss of bone density). If circulatory problems disrupt the secretion of balanced amounts of insulin in the pancreatic islets of Langerhans, diabetes may develop.

Gallstones in the liver can cause liver cells to cut down protein synthesis. Reduced protein synthesis, in turn, prompts the adrenal glands to overproduce cortisol,a hormone that stimulates protein synthesis. Too much cortisol in the blood gives rise to atrophy of lymphoid tissue and a depressed immune response, which is considered the leading cause of cancer and many other major illnesses.

An imbalance in the secretion of adrenal hormones can cause a wide variety of disorders, as it leads to weakened febrile response (fever) and diminished protein synthesis. Proteins are the major building blocks for tissue cells, hormones, and so forth. The liver is capable of producing many different hormones. Hormones determine how well the body grows and heals.

The liver also inhibits certain hormones, including insulin, glucagon, cortisol, aldosterone, thyroid, and sex hormones. Gallstones in the liver impair this vital function, which may increase hormone concentrations in the blood. Hormone imbalance is an extremely serious condition and can easily occur when gallstones in the liver have disrupted major circulatory pathways that are also hormonal pathways. For example, by failing to keep blood cortisol levels balanced, a person may accumulate excessive amounts of fat in the body. If estrogens are not broken down properly, the risk of breast cancer increases. If blood insulin is not broken down properly, the risk of cancer rises, and the cells in the body may become resistant to insulin, which is a major precursor of diabetes.

Disease is naturally absent when blood flow and lymph flow are both unhindered and normal. Both types of problems - circulatory and lymphatic - can be successfully eliminated through a series of liver flushes and prevented by following a balanced diet and lifestyle.

High Blood Pressure - Expert Advice on What to Do When it Won't Come Down

Many people can't lose the necessary weight by exercising and reducing stress. Quitting smoking doesn't help normalize their blood pressure low enough long-term either because of damage caused to arteries and blood vessels. Why is this? As you grow older, your arteries will also harden and become less elastic so your blood pressure will go up because your heart has to work harder to pump blood around the body. This occurs in all people, regardless of your lifestyle - good or bad.

Prescription drugs on the market work, but they don't work on everybody and sometimes have dangerous and unpleasant side effects. But there are complementary remedies believed to be effective in helping reduce high blood pressure when all else seems not to be working, which we'll discuss now.

What is L-Arginine and Nitric Oxide?

In 1998, a team of American scientists won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for their discovery of the amino acid called L-Arginine and the Nitric oxide pathway. Over 35,000 articles have been published on the importance of the nitric oxide pathway and the amazing influence of L-Arginine on this pathway.

L-Arginine is the precursor to a nitric oxide, which is an important signaling molecule in the body. It is a conditionally non-essential amino acid, meaning most of the time it can be manufactured by the human body.

However, many people do not produce enough L-Arginine because of an unhealthy lifestyle caused by damage to endothelial cells in your arteries due to smoking and being overweight, illness, a toxic environment or old age.

Production of Nitric Oxide and your overall health can also be enhanced through regular exercise and a diet focused on consuming large enough amounts of L-Arginine. Although, it can be difficult to meet your bodies total Nitric Oxide requirement through diet alone - so supplements are recommended to assure optimum daily intake.

How Can Nitric Oxide Works to Lower High Blood Pressure?

L-Arginine is converted into the gas nitric oxide, which causes blood vessel relaxation (vasodilation). Nitric oxide helps to promote optimal blood flow throughout the body - research and on-going trials on this amino acid found in our bodies, suggest it can help reduce high blood pressure.

Nitric oxide plays a large role in regulating the tone of blood vessels. More nitric oxide causes blood vessels to relax and dilate, allowing more blood to flow through, which lowers blood pressure because your heart will not have to pump as hard.

How Else Can Your Body Cardiovascular Benefit From Nitric Oxide?

Evidence suggests that L-Arginine may also help treat medical conditions that improve with vasodilation, such as chest pain, clogged arteries (called atherosclerosis), coronary artery disease, erectile dysfunction, heart failure, intermittent claudication/peripheral vascular disease, and blood vessel swelling that causes headaches (vascular headaches). L-Arginine also triggers the body to make protein and has been studied for wound healing, bodybuilding, enhancement of sperm production (spermatogenesis), and prevention of wasting in people with critical illnesses.

Atherosclerosis (ath-er-o-skler-O-sis) is a disease in which plaque (plak) builds up on the insides of your arteries, it damages to the endothelium, which causes a decline in Nitric Oxide. Over time, plaque hardens and narrows your arteries. The flow of oxygen-rich blood to your organs and other parts of your body is reduced. You may be able to prevent or delay atherosclerosis and the diseases it can cause, mainly by maintaining a healthy lifestyle and L-Arginine supplementation.

Similarly a heart attack is caused by an area of plaque that can rupture, causing a blood clot to form on the surface of the plaque. If the clot becomes large enough, it can mostly or completely block the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the part of the heart muscle fed by the artery. By taking the steps to lower blood pressure and cholesterol and improve circulation, nitric oxide can help reduce the risk against a heart attack.

A stroke happens when blood flow to your brain stops. Within minutes, brain cells begin to die. The most common kind, is called an ischemic stroke, it is caused by a blood clot that blocks or plugs a blood vessel in the brain. Again when normal production of nitric oxide is reduced within vessel walls, you are much more prone to clotting and strokes.

How Much is a Safe Dose?

Individuals should always consult their doctor before taking any supplements; he or she knows your medical history better than anyone. This is important especially if you have any pre-existing conditions and currently take prescription drugs. L-Arginine has been found to be a safe amino acid based on scientific research and expert opinion. 5 grams per day is a recommended standard dose without worry of any adverse side effects. If you take more than your body needs or wants, your body will eliminate the excess. In some cases, taking more than you need can cause diarrhea. If this occurs, reduce the amount.

What Do You Look For in an L-Arginine Product?

There are many manufacturers of L-Arginine in supplement form, but all brands are not created equal! One important benefit of the product is that it should be a liquid to enable optimum absorption - to allow it to go in quickly, allows less toxicity, and more assurance it's getting in. It should also contain L-Citrulline, which enables L-Arginine when converted into Nitric Oxide to sustain its activity over a longer period of time. No artificial, sweeteners or colors, just all natural and all good!

Other supplements you can take on a daily basis that can enhance your cardiovascular health are antioxidants such as omega oils from plant sources (Perilla), and a multi-vitamin.

Symptoms Of A Swollen Liver

Swollen liver is a commonly used term for a liver that has grown to an abnormal size. It can also be called an enlarged liver. The medical term is hepatomegaly. A swollen liver is not considered to be a disease, but is rather a symptom of some underlying disorder like cirrhosis, hepatitis, fatty liver disease or cancer.

Typically, there are no swollen liver symptoms until the disease or condition that causes swelling reaches a serious stage. By then, significant liver damage has probably occurred. If symptoms are ignored or left untreated at this point, liver failure could eventually become a reality. Liver failure is fatal without a liver transplant.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms described below, tell your doctor about them right away. He or she alone is qualified to make a diagnosis. The information presented here is intended solely to give you a basic and introductory knowledge of the symptoms of liver swelling so you can discuss them with your doctor.

Once again, if the liver is only slightly swollen, there are likely to be no symptoms whatsoever. But if the liver is grossly swollen, several symptoms may appear that point to liver trouble.

Jaundice is the most prominent of these. Jaundice occurs because of an abnormal build up of a bile pigment known as bilirubin in the blood. This accumulation of bilirubin causes the skin and the whites of the eyes to look yellow.

Senses of sight and smell may be heightened when you have a swollen liver. Smells that never bothered you before can suddenly become unpleasant - even offensive. Patients with liver problems often report especially strong reactions to certain chemical smells like household cleaners and insecticides.

Another swollen liver symptom that doesn't typically occur with other diseases is a distressing sensitivity to light. This is known as photophobia. It should be noted that unlike many other phobias, photophobia isn't a fear of light so much as it is a physical reaction to light that hurts the eyes. Photophobia can be a symptom of other problems, but when combined with other signs of liver swelling, it often helps confirm a diagnosis.

Someone with a swollen liver is also likely to experience occasional, even frequent feelings of fullness in the lower stomach and upper abdominal areas. This can happen even though the patient eats very little, and in fact, has an unusual lack of interest in food and eating. A reduced appetite is a common sign of liver swelling.

Painful muscles and joints are typical too. Someone who is getting older could easily mistake these symptoms for the onset of arthritis.

There are likely to be noticeable changes in bowel movements. When you have a swollen liver, you may experience bouts of either diarrhea or constipation. The color of your urine will also probably change, becoming dark or cloudy.

If you have a persistent cough even though you have no symptoms of a respiratory infection or allergies, it could be a symptom of a swollen liver. Keep in mind however, that if you're taking a blood pressure medication you may have a mild but persistent cough as a side effect. Fatigue and a feeling of constant weariness are symptoms of liver swelling too. These may sometimes be accompanied by nausea, vomiting and an occasional fever.

Certain liver disorders or conditions are considered to be signs of a swollen liver. They include:

  • cholestasis, a condition that occurs when bile flowing from the liver is obstructed,

  • portal hypertension, or high blood pressure in the portal vein, which transports blood between the intestines and the liver,

  • ascites, which is an accumulation of fluids in the abdominal area, and

  • liver encephalopathy, which causes reduced brain function due to an accumulation of toxic substances in the body that are normally removed by the liver.

If you have a swollen liver that's in the early stages, the only way to tell is through testing. Your doctor can suggest liver function tests that can liver swelling long before any physical symptoms appear. Such tests can be a valuable tool for ensuring that your liver is healthy - and a signal that you need to make some lifestyle changes or get treatment if it is not.

Four Things to Help Heal Your Heart Naturally

Heart disease is always a big issue and it's because so many people, and many women, constantly suffer from it. While obesity is starting to creep close to heart disease as the number one killer, heart disease really stems from obesity and other unhealthy habits.

In this article, you are going to learn four things that you can do starting today to help your body keep your heart healthy and going strong.

First, you have to change your diet. The number one cause of heart disease is contributed to the nutrition. You have to revamp it and move it to clean eating. Foods like fresh veggies, beans, complex carbs, and good fruits all can help you fight heart disease. One last thing when it comes to food is to make sure you eat 5 to 6 smaller meals a day.

Second, you have to heal your arteries and reduce that inflammation. The way to do this is by exercising. When you exercise, you strip away all of the materials that cause irritation in the arteries. You will hear people say that all you have to do is 30 minutes of walking or something like that. But if you are going to exercise, do it right and work to lose body fat and sculpt a tight body.

Third, you have to calm your heart down to stop it from spasming and make your arteries more elastic. This really boils down to getting rid of the unhealthy stress that you deal with on a daily basis. If you can, try to take about 15 or 30 minutes and do nothing but relax. Maybe try some yoga to relax and get your mind off of your troubles. This de-stressing can help you reduce build up in arteries.

Fourth, find a group of like minded people that are trying to get healthy too. A lot of times this might not be your family, but with the Internet these days, you can easily find a group of people that you an join for support and accountability. This step is huge because if you have that accountability, you are one hundred times more likely to see your health goals through.

Lack of Energy - Signs, Symptoms, Causes

Lack of energy is a common complaint. There are dozens of products on the market that are supposedly the solution to the problem. But what causes energy loss? When is it normal? When does fatigue indicate a more serious problem? The information here will answer those questions.

Normal Sleepiness and Fatigue

Normal sleepiness occurs as the result of biochemical changes brought on by darkness. Fatigue (being tired) after running a marathon or hiking a dozen miles on the Appalachian Trail is normal. After cleaning house all day, it is normal to want to sit down, rest and relax for the evening.

Feeling a little tired at midday may be normal, though frustrating. It seems to be something that lots of people experience. Addressing certain dietary and lifestyle issues may be helpful.

To a certain degree, energy levels may normally decrease with age. There is a natural change in the resting metabolism once a person reaches adulthood. But the decrease is only about 10%. A severe reduction of energy is not a normal part of the aging process.

More Serious Fatigue

In less severe cases, the only symptom is a general lack of energy. You might feel like you need a nap or simply feel no motivation to do anything.

The symptoms of serious energy loss or fatigue can include any of the following:

Feeling weak; difficulty lifting lightweight objects

Exhaustion; inability to get out of bed or complete normal daily activities

Blurred vision

Disturbed or restless sleep

Headache/body aches

Dizziness or vertigo

Feeling out of breath after mild exertion

Heart palpitations

Decreased reaction time; slow movements

Cold intolerance

Mental confusion, memory loss, difficulty concentrating, etc.

These symptoms may accompany feelings of sleepiness or lack of energy on a regular basis or only occasionally. The symptoms are often the same regardless of the cause, which can make a medical diagnosis difficult. There are many possible causes.

Causes

Lack of physical activity is one of the causes that surprise many people. There is actually a term for it in the medical community. It is called sedentary inertia. The less you move, the less you will feel like moving. Then there's malnutrition.

When you think of malnutrition, you may think of a starving child in a third world country. Scientists have a different definition of malnutrition. It is defined as any condition caused by deficient, imbalanced or excessive nutrient intake.

Excessive nutrient intake over an extended period of time will lead to obesity. Obese individuals are more easily fatigued, simply because they are carrying so much weight around all the time. Many of the "other symptoms" listed above accompany obesity.

Water is a nutrient. Dehydration can sap your energy as quickly as anything else. The first sign of dehydration is thirst, but thirst is not experienced until your body is already low on fluids and the thirst signal is less efficient as we age.

Vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates, fats, micronutrients, cofactors and trace elements must be consumed in proper quantities and in proper balance in order for the body to function optimally and have optimal energy levels.

Every infection and disease is accompanied by the symptom of fatigue. The body needs rest in order to fight off the illness and recover from it.

Mental health problems such as depression and anxiety are accompanied by fatigue and many of the other symptoms above. Chronic conditions such as allergies, arthritis, diabetes, fibromyalgia, hypothyroidism and ME-CFS cause lower energy levels.

Finally, there are medications. Many people take over-the-counter medicines on a regular basis to address symptoms like headache, body ache or allergies. Fatigue or sleepiness is a side effect of most drugs. Even stimulant use will eventually result in lower energy levels.

Now that you understand the signs, symptoms and causes, you would probably like to learn how to get your energy back. My next article covers that topic.

Pug Health Alert - Protect Your Pug Against These Common Conditions

Many dog owners lose their precious Pugs when it could have been easily avoided.

As a Pug parent, you should be well informed of this special breed's common fatal diseases or conditions and their corresponding symptoms.

Pug Dog Encephalitis (PDE)

Every Pug owner dreads this disease which is exclusive to this breed. A Pug afflicted with PDE means that its brain has become swollen or inflamed.

Symptoms: Seizures, loss of muscle coordination, pacing in circles, unusually violent behavior (barking and biting), and restlessness are the most obvious symptoms of PDE. Another telltale sign is when they press their head against a hard surface, indicating that they are in agonizing pain. Watch out for these symptoms in Pugs between 2-3 years old. PDE can cause sudden death if not treated at its early stage.

Heatstroke

Pugs are susceptible to heatstroke because of their thick skin. Be on the lookout for these possible signs of heatstroke especially during the summer months.

Symptoms: Rapid breathing, excessive thick saliva or dry mouth, vomiting and loss of balance, are some of the signs of a fatal heatstroke in Pugs. These symptoms along with fever (103 degrees Fahrenheit or 39 degrees Celsius and above) and vividly red tongue and gums confirm that you should bring your Pug to the vet immediately.

Poisoning or Allergy

Probably the most overlooked cause of death in dogs in general is poisoning and allergies. Your Pug could be a victim of poisoning or extreme allergic reactions due to a number of things such as dog food, antifreeze, medications, shampoo, household chemicals, plants or even fabric.

Symptoms: Rush your Pug to the vet if it begins to exhibit breathing difficulty, chronic wheezing or coughing, severe watery eyes, excessive scratching, sudden hair loss or falling hair, vomiting and diarrhea.

Heartworm

A common cause of fatality in Pugs is severe heartworm infestation. This type of parasite is deadly as it invades the major organs which include the heart and lungs. Heartworms can be passed on to dogs through a mosquito bite. It is important to determine the symptoms of severe infestation as it can lead to instant death in Pugs.

Symptoms: Your Pug's stamina or endurance is a good indicator of heartworm infestation. If simple walks in the park or short runs easily wind your pug, it may be a sign of heartworm disease. Irregular breathing sounds coming from the lungs and chronic coughing are likewise strong indicators of heartworm infestation.

Heart Disease or Cardiomyopathy

Anatomically speaking, a Pug is susceptible to heart failure or cardiac arrest. Its squished in face, short nose and tongue and heavy weight are all factors to heart conditions. While a heart failure results in instant death, paying closer attention to earlier symptoms or signs may save your Pug.

Symptoms: Labored breathing, foaming mouth, white or pale gums, loss of appetite, increased heart rate, coughing, loud snoring or snorting, slow or stilted movement, and fainting all point to the onset of a heart failure. Immediate medical attention is needed if your Pug shows these symptoms.

Enjoy long years with your precious Pug by being mindful of your pet's common ailments and symptoms.

Does Milk Help Acid Reflux?

When people suffer with acid reflux or heartburn, one of the biggest priorities is finding remedies to make the discomfort go away. One of the biggest debates surrounding this disease is does milk help acid reflux and its symptoms. The true answer to whether or not milk can help is simply yes and no. Milk may actually prove itself to be effective as a short term cure for the effects of heart burn and acid reflux, but while it tends to be an excellent treatment for some people, others are not as lucky.

Understanding whether or not milk is capable of helping should begin with an understanding of what acid reflux is and how it affects the body. The principal symptom of heart burn or acid reflux is an uncomfortable burning sensation in the chest. The principal culprit for this burning sensation is the lower esophageal sphincter, also known as the LES, which occasionally causes acidic contents from the stomach to pass up into the esophagus. What makes this happen is two different factors: The first is the unusual pressure that is created within the stomach, and the second is the weak muscles in the LES being unable to hold the stomach contents back.

Some medications may be capable of helping the LES tighten up more effectively, the situation can still be aggravated beyond control when there is too much acid secretion. At this point, you would need to make use of acid inhibitory drugs which are designed to neutralize the stomach's acidity, better controlling the pressure that is normally created there.

Milk is regarded as a substance that is both alkaline and acidic, and depending on which school of thought you follow, may or may not be looked at as capable of neutralizing the acidity of the stomach to a greater extent. Because milk has a pH value of 6.7, some people feel that it is too acidic to be beneficial to the acidity of your stomach. Still, it may be alkaline enough to neutralize the acidity of the stomach without necessarily reducing it.

What both schools of thought do appear to agree upon is that if milk should be capable of neutralizing the stomach acidity in order to help with acid reflux and heart burn, the best type of milk to use should be completely fat free milk. It is believed that milk is capable of providing a soothing and protective layer in the stomach and esophagus, protecting sensitive tissue from the harmful burn from the acid reflux. The fatty part of the milk is capable of creating further acidity which is why nonfat milk is the preferred method when trying to combat the acidity of the stomach.

Many people assume that the best type of milk for combating acid reflux is the purest, most natural milk that you can find with as little fat as possible. When you remove the fat, antibiotics, processing and other things from the milk, it may be much more capable of helping fight against the uncomfortable symptoms once and for all. While milk does not seem capable of helping everyone with acid reflux, it does certainly seem capable of helping some people making it well worth trying.  Then, you can definitively answer the question does milk help acid reflux?

Signs of Stroke in Women - They May Not Be What You Expect

You may or may not know the warning symptoms of a stroke. If you do know the classic signs, there is a good chance you don't know how stroke sometimes manifests itself in women.

If all you know are the classic signs of stroke, you don't know enough.

Recent research has shown that the classic symptoms of stroke may not always be the symptoms women experience. Women may complain of different symptoms than men when entering and emergency room. Often, the symptoms women complain about are different from the list and because of the discrepancy, women are more apt to be checked for something other than a stroke. This wastes valuable time during which they could be receiving important and necessary treatments. Many women do have traditional symptoms so it is best not to assume they aren't having a stroke because their signs are classic. It is important to recognize both the classic signs of stroke as well as the signs that may present themselves in the female gender exclusively.

The classic stroke symptoms:

weakness or numbness, especially in one side of the body

difficulty speaking or the inability to speak

blurred or double vision

dizziness, loss of balance and coordination

confusion, memory impairment and spatial perception

sudden and severe headache

Other Possible Signs of Stroke in Women:

falls or accidents

seizure

Sudden:

pain in the face, arms, chest or legs

nausea

tiredness

heart palpitations

hiccups

How well a patient recovers from stroke depends on how quickly they are treated. The first three hours after the onset of a stroke are the optimal time for receiving the best clot busting drugs. The diagnosis of a stroke within that time is crucial and may determine whether a person lives or recovers.

This is yet another area of concern involving women and variations of symptoms. Women are known to have different complaints when it comes to heart attack as well.

Because of the ignorance about women's distinct differences involving major health issues such as heart attack and stroke, the mortality rate for women is higher than it has to be. We can lower the numbers by increasing awareness.

What Is Polycystic Kidney Disease? - Get All The Key Facts

Polycystic kidney disease is a genetic disorder where clusters of cysts grow primarily in the kidneys, the organs responsible for filtering waste and excess fluid from the blood. These cysts are filled with fluid and can cause the kidneys to become enlarged. Eventually, the cysts can take over the kidneys and impair their function, leading to kidney failure.

What Causes It

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is inherited. The most common form is autosomal dominant PKD, accounting for approximately 90 percent of all PKD cases. Symptoms of autosomal dominant PKD most often occur after the age of 30. Autosomal recessive PKD is rarer with symptoms showing up early, in some cases in the womb.

Symptoms

This form of kidney disease produces several symptoms, including many that are present with other forms of kidney disease. They include:

•    Anemia

•    Blood in the urine

•    Enlarged abdomen

•    Headaches

•    Hemorrhoids

•    High blood pressure

•    Impaired growth

•    Irregular urination

•    Kidney failure

•    Kidney stones

•    Urinary tract or kidney infections

•    Varicose veins

Complications

If you have polycystic kidney disease you have a high risk of developing hypertension or high blood pressure. Hypertension further damages the kidneys and increases your likelihood of developing a cardiovascular problem such as an aneurysm or heart valve abnormality.

As the disease progresses, PKD may cause cysts to grow in the liver, heart or brain as well. It may also cause complications during pregnancy or lead to diverticulosis - bulging sacs in the colon.

Diagnosis

In many cases, PKD doesn't produce symptoms early on, so blood or urine tests aren't as reliable initially for diagnosis. Instead, polycystic kidney disease is usually diagnosed through medical imaging technology, which can pick up the cysts once they reach about half an inch in size.

Ultrasound tests are the most frequent tests used for diagnosis, and can diagnose cysts even in a foetus. However, computerized tomography (CT) scans and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are more powerful tests that may also be used. These tests can help to assess the progression of the disease.

Treatment

Reducing high blood pressure is essential when you have PKD. This step helps to limit the amount of damage to your kidneys, and delays or prevents complications of PKD such as cardiovascular problems or anemia. There are several natural ways to lower your blood pressure, including exercising daily, eliminating salt from your diet, or taking nutritional and herbal supplements.

Your doctor may also recommend having the kidney cysts drained or removed. If you develop a kidney, bladder or urinary tract infection you may need to take antibiotics. Also, hormone replacement therapy is not recommended when you have polycystic kidney disease.

If PKD becomes advanced you may develop kidney failure which means you may need to undergo dialysis or have a kidney transplant. The use of natural therapies can help to reverse and prevent kidney damage, including polycystic kidneys. This is includes nutritional supplements, herbs and dietary and lifestyle changes. If incorporated correctly these not only help to relieve symptoms but can also remove the cause of kidney damage.

People Walking For Heart Health

When you see that title, what do you think of? Do you think of people walking to raise money for the American Heart Association? Or do you think of people walking for their own heart health? Whichever way you have imagined it, the most important thing is that you see people walking.

How can people walking help their heart?

That is such a great question! Did you know that research has shown that walking 30 minutes a day can help:

o Improve your blood pressure and blood sugar (diabetes too).

o Improve your cholesterol (good and bad cholesterol).

o Reduce your risk of coronary heart disease.

The American Heart Association has even written a book called The Healthy Heart Walking Book: The American Heart Association Walking Program. Not only does the American Heart Associate encourage walking but the Partnership to Fight Chronic Diseases suggests walking as a part of the prevention program for Diabetes. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) also suggests that walking can reduce the rate of those with diabetes dying of heart related issues.

Enough scientific talk!

What it comes down to is that exercise, walking in particular, increases the blood flow to your heart. Your heart is a muscle and every time you exercise it, it gets stronger. The stronger a muscle is the more blood flow goes to it, which brings oxygen to it and it just works a whole lot better.

What if you already have heart issues?

The benefits of walking will only help you! If you do have heart problems or issues, walking is one of the best exercises for you because it doesn't put added stress on the heart and will improve the function of it. Now I am not a doctor and there is no miracle cure here but walking (unless your doctor advises against it) will give you great benefits!

Celibacy - A Blessing Or A Disease?

Exploring the depths of CELIBACY derived from my own and the personal experience of others around what I describe as transitory abstinence. A form of abstinence that is neither intentional or religious based. The need to understand and distinguish the sexual hiatus we sometimes, voluntarily or involuntarily, live through and the need to bring this topic into the light is the seed behind this piece of writing.

Is it safe to say that there are fewer men than women who claim celibacy? Statistics reveal that women are more sexually restricted then men. Could it be that we live in such a trendy world where people are drawn to and adhere to popular themes and beliefs; and that the common patterns are often learned and imitated from the home while social, peer and religious circles overpower our natural inclinations? In spite of the self-deprivation and self-rejection that takes place when one follows someone else's guidance rather than their own heart, very few are brave enough to connect intimately with their authentic self and to be who they truly are,

The state of separation from physical love and comfort that comes not by conscious will - but from unconscious restrictions and limitations is certainly indicative of the war and conflict that is taking place within the greater collective human soul, reflected in our personal relationships and mirrored externally in the chaos and warfare around the globe.

The deprivation of physical love results in sexual tension. Sexual tension builds up and becomes the underlying vibrations, the lack of flow in our central nervous system that throws us off balance. Most testify and admit that when they're not "getting it" they resonate on odd vibrations of edginess, agitation and crabbiness whiles others claim a sense of disconnect and a kind of fragmentation between body and mind. However, when one receives constant loving touch and physical love then patience and happiness and a glow of content usually follows naturally.

I can personally attest to the side effects of involuntary celibacy. Here's an example: my son asks me for his binoculars. I tell him they are in the container that his video games are in. There are two boxes, he looks in one. He asks me again and I tell him to look in the other. But I tell him with a snappy twist to my intonation. I am a bit impatient and irritated because I "think" he is not looking properly. I catch myself and realize that it's not even about the dialogue but the unsettling "feelings" after being in a place of involuntary abstinence for a period of time. Deep inside I am, in truth, longing for the physical love and closeness that feeds me on that level. Thus the sexual tension is raising its restricted head.

Our kids are the closest to us (particularly single parents) so they see our dark side quite often. They get to see the parts of us that we do not comfortably or easily reveal to others. Some (I) realize that the built up tension has brought on behavior out of the ordinary and afterwards experience feelings of regret and guilt for snapping at the (our) innocent children. Sexual tension, all along, lurking in the darkness, ready to spring out the moment someone taps on its back.

Kendra, a single woman, shares that when she is involuntarily celibate she gets a fair share of headaches, tension in her neck and shoulders which indicates that she's been more in her head than being connected with her (lower) body. She has frequent dreams of sweet sexual encounters and wakes up feeling unfulfilled. This is evident of the changes in her hormones and body as a result of being sexually removed or inactive for a stretch of time.

Jeff, a single man who has not been involved with a woman for over a year but may have an occasional sexual encounter, shares that he frequently relieves the built up tension in his sexual organs and body. Discussions with several men reveal similar experiences of self-pleasuring. Ecko, from London, says he consciously channels his sexual energy into his work.

Choice is at the heart of celibacy. However for many that choice is not based on factual understanding of the options, but instead on guilt and ignorance founded in false religious teachings or their upbringings that were based on control. Clearly there is no biblical basis for celibacy whether single or married and too often someone seeking celibacy may be hiding deeper fears of intimacy that needs to be explored and addressed.

Did you know that the superficial laws created by religious men of centuries ago for their own gain may still be governing your mind and body today? According to the history of Catholic celibacy, before the middle ages it was allowable for Catholic priests to have multiple wives and mistresses (concubines). But with concerns for protecting Church property from inheritance, Pope Pelagius I made new priests agree their offspring could not inherit Church property. Pope Gregory then declared all sons of priests illegitimate. In 1022 Pope Benedict VII banned marriages and concubines for priests and in 1139 Pope Innocent II voided all marriages of priests and all new priests had to divorce their wives. This had nothing to do with morality. Multiple women for males had long been the norm before biblical times. It was all about MONEY!!

Spiritual and cultural attitudes toward sexuality have caused a great deal of confusion between the hearts and minds of humans. In its extremity and often advocated by outdated religious legislation, celibacy is often taught of as the path to God. Yet, its superficial imposition is another form of attachment that denies the powerful emotional and biological connection between two people. The more sexuality is suppressed the higher the tension among all humans and the greater the sexual agitation. Denial breeds suppression, and where there is suppression there is a host of other unwanted issues, obscurities and problems such as poor health - mentally and or physically; rape, incest, war and even natural disasters. This continues the ferocious cycle of lower consciousness and pandemonium around sex that infiltrates us on a personal and global scale.

Celibacy is physically unnatural and can result in physical problems as there are health benefits to the sexual act - mind, emotions, body and spirit. While people are being drenched and consumed by the increasing advancement of technology, humans are suffering ever more due to the ignorance and sedation that obscure the understanding and workings of their own body. If this was not so, people would not give over their lives and power to the medical industrial complex. Instead the vision of a globe in which the collective and individual consciousness around sexuality is elevated, highly developed and harmonious; and the focus on the natural process of good health and well being would be a reality.

"Contrary to popular belief, celibacy is not a sign of spirituality. Brief periods of abstinence from sex and total celibacy are completely different in their effect. The celibate lives of monks and nuns are a form of spiritual hypocrisy, since they are denying their natural sexual functions any mode of expression and at the same time separating them selves from the very act that brought them into existence. Celibacy leads to bigotry, fanaticism, and narrow-mindedness because of the unnatural restrictions placed on sexual expression." This is the principle of "Shiva", the sensual male counterpart of "Shakti" as mentioned by Douglas and Slinger in their acclaimed book, Sexual Secrets.

"The thing called passion has to be understood and not suppressed or sublimated... To love is to be in direct communication....how can one love and understand passion if you have taken a vow against it? A vow is a form of resistance, and what you resist ultimately conquers you", says Krishnamurti in The Book of Life.

The ignorance around celibacy is destructive when one is not aware of the health ramifications, the stagnation of energy within their mind and body, the congestion that accumulates in the reproductive organs and the abdominal and lower back; the health setbacks. When someone chooses consciously and wisely to refrain from sex for a reasonable period of time (for what ever reason) they can also choose to channel those energies into a creative project of some sort as well as engage in exercises or activities that blend and balance the mind, body experience. Yoga, tai chi, swimming, dancing, running, bodywork are just a few. This helps keep the energy centers and reproductive organs nourished and flowing. One feels balanced, focused and comfortable within their own temple.

Sex can be an erotic exercise, build a happy and healthy heart. There are specific health benefits for him and for her, longevity, and no doubt it's the most pleasurable stress relieving act. Common sense, living experiences and a handful of studies suggest that sex can, in fact be good for your health. So keep in mind the potential fringe benefits the next time your spouse initiates it, your lover reaches out or the opportunity for (safe & sensible) sex arises. After all....Sex is not just good, it's good for you and your health!

Parkinson's Disease -- Prevention & Alleviating the Symptoms

The compound below is showing great promise not only for the prevention of Parkinson's disease, but also alleviating of the symptoms.

It's cheap, naturally part of the food chain, and showing great promise with the treatment of a number of conditions in addition to Parkinson's disease, from Depression to Alzheimer's, as well as many others.

The compound is familiar to everyone and is:

Nicotine

Parkinson's disease belongs to a group of conditions that occur less among cigarette smokers than in non-smokers.

Smoking is of course harmful, no one should take it up to prevent or alleviate the disease; however the specific compound in cigarette smoking that is believed to prevent and also provide relief for suffers is - Nicotine.

Nicotine in Pure Form is safe & non toxic

Nicotine removed from cigarettes in its natural state is a safe, non toxic and is found in many common foods and vegetables.

Nicotine is now showing great promise in medical research in terms of both prevention of Parkinson's disease, and also for the alleviation of the symptoms.

Nicotine & Parkinson's Disease Research

Research has suggested that some of the movement difficulties experienced by Parkinson suffers are less severe after smoking cigarettes, taking nicotine gum or using nicotine patches.

Researchers have been aware for over 30 years that fewer smokers get Parkinson's diseases than non-smokers.

The observation was first made in the 1970's and similar results have been shown in all subsequent tests.

The protective effect is large, active smokers have a 60% reduction in risk compared with those who have never been smokers.

Nicotine is not only showing great promise in its preventive affect but also in alleviating the symptoms of suffers who have the disease already.

How Nicotine can help

Prevention

Researchers believe that the main reason underlying the protective action of nicotine maybe its ability to increase the expression of neurotrophic factors that are known to help the survival of dopaminergic neurons, as nicotine increases the number of "nicotinic" receptors in the brain.

These receptors influence the production and release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Parkinson's disease occurs when brain cells that produce dopamine, an important chemical messenger die.

People don't get Parkinson's disease until approximatley 80% to 90% of the dopamine-producing cells are dead.

Nicotine is believed to protect these cells against damage and as a consequence prevent the disease.

Alleviating the symptoms

Nicotine may help to lessen memory difficulties which occur in some people with Parkinson's disease.

The number of nicotinic receptors are decreased in the brains of people who have Parkinson's disease.

The nicotine in cigarette smoke, in the nicotine patch or in gum may lead to an extra stimulation of these remaining nicotinic receptors and thus alleviate the symptoms.

Products

Nicotine is available in patches and gum and several companies have looked at nicotine water as a safe delivery method for organic nicotine with no added chemicals.

Nicotine water is already being marketed and further products are being researched, all with the aim of delivering pure organic nicotine without harmful chemicals.

Nicotine natures wonder drug?

While nicotine has had an image problem due to its association with smoking.

There is however a lot of excitement about its potential to prevent and help with a number of medical conditions that include not only Parkinson's disease, but also:

Alzheimer's disease, Schizophrenia, obesity, depression and even some cancers.

Research is at an early stage with many conditions, but Nicotine could just be about to get public recognition for its significant health benefits.

You see many of the drugs designed to combat yeast infection symptoms contain antifungal agents. They are just another form of antibiotic. One of the main causes of fungal infections are antibiotics!

Women who experience frequent and non-stop yeast infection symptoms often complain with a persistent vaginal itch accompanied with vaginal discharge that smells of yeast, discomfort during sexual intercourse, a burning sensation when urinating and irritation and redness of the vagina. There are other related symptoms related to candida overgrowth: fatigue, constipation, skin irritation, depression, muscle aches and memory loss. While this is not considered a serious health condition, when left untreated for a long period it can lead to serious diseases.

Yeast infection symptoms are caused by an overgrowth of yeast (candida) in the body and they are frequent in women just before menstruation, during pregnancy or menopause because during those times the changes in the vaginal pH make it easy for candida to overgrow. A weak immune system causes yeast to overgrow. Our bodies have all the necessary natural defences to combat fungal infections, yeast is common in all our bodies but at times it can overgrow and the only way to fight this, is to address the root cause of the problem.

What affects the growth of yeast?

Regular use of antibiotics - these kill off good bacteria making it easy of yeast to overgrow. Try and stay off them or speak to your doctor about alternative treatments for any other health conditions you have until the symptoms have subsided.

Birth control pills - certain birth control pills have the same effect on our bodies as antibiotics do. Again speak to your doctor about taking you off or offering alternatives.

Our diet - a diet high in sugar, dairy products and refined carbohydrates feeds our bodies even more yeast making it very easy overpopulate. Eliminating these and introducing more fresh fruit and vegetables will build up your immune system. You can then slowly reintroduce these after your the symptoms have subsided.

People with HIV and diabetes are more prone to fungal infections because of their already weak immune system. Stress is another major cause of fungal infections and can have a negative effect on the immune system- learning how to effectively manage stress will help you deal not only with yeast infections symptoms but can eradicate other health problems such as blood pressure and heart disease.

Symptoms of Childhood Diabetes - Most Common Symptoms

Diabetes is a very common type of disease. It is also very common among the children. It has the ability to do a great harm to the young children, but with the help of advance medical treatment childhood diabetes can be reduced in a sustainable position. It can be easily detected at the earlier stage by observing some symptoms at the starting time.

The most common initial symptom of diabetes is the rate of urination will increase in a high volume. If you need to urinate more frequently than regular, you must take care of it. It happens when the blood contain more sugar. Thirst is another common symptom of childhood diabetes. Besides these, rapidly loss weight and tiredness is another symptom of childhood diabetes. Pain in the abdominal part or tummy pain is another symptom of childhood diabetes. Your child will feel excessive headaches and some major changes in regular behavior will take place.

Your child will feel more hungry than regular. It happens because glucose in blood does not properly transformed into energy. So the whole body system faces some lack of energy and nutrition. It makes the child to become hungry excessively. You should take care of this disease as soon as you dictate any of the above symptoms in your child. If you start the treatment earlier, you will find better results. Do not ignore these symptoms as regular illness. It can easily do a huge harm to your child.

When babies develop juvenile diabetes, they can soak their diapers and bed clothes in less than half an hour, lose weight, develop flu-like symptoms, have yeast infections, and the odd smell to their breath that develops in later stages of untreated high blood sugar, but may still not be checked for diabetes with a simple blood or urine test.

You will receive better result if you start the treatment at the early stage. Knowing the symptoms of diabetes and being aware of the symptoms of unexpected low or high blood sugar in children who have diabetes can save the life of that child. So do it, if your child got one or more of the above symptoms. This is a kind of killer disease. It can kill you if you do not follow some strict rules. It is better to defend it as early as possible. So you should always be serious about the most common symptoms of childhood diabetes if you want their smooth life.

Do You Have One Or More of These Signs And Symptoms of Diabetes Mellitus?

Diabetes is a killer disease. It can lead to kidney failure, heart disease, neuropathy, blindness, and much more. If you have diabetes, you must take control of it immediately. If you are unsure or concerned, get yourself checked out by a physician.

The signs and symptoms of diabetes mellitus are visible if you care to look. The American Diabetes Association claims there are over 20 million people that have diabetes in the United States. It is estimated that there are close to 6.2 million people that have the signs and symptoms of diabetes mellitus and do not even know it. The World Health Organization states estimates that there are over 200 million people world wide that have the signs and symptoms of diabetes mellitus. Many do not know they have the disease.

Insulin, a hormone released from the pancreas, controls the extent of sugar in the blood. Once one has eaten, food is broken down into materials, including sugar that the body needs to function. Sugar is absorbed into the bloodstream and stimulates the pancreas to make insulin. This allows sugar to dissolve from the blood into the cells. Once inside the cells, sugar is converted to energy, which is either used immediately or stored until it is needed.

If the body does not produce enough insulin to influence the sugar into the cells, the resulting important levels of sugar in the blood and the patchy amount of sugar in the cells together produce the sign and symptoms of diabetes mellitus.

Here are some signs and symptoms of diabetes mellitus: How many do you have?

1. You're at least 45 years old.

2. Your waist is over 40 inches if you are man and over 34.5 inches if you are a women.

3. You do not exercise more than half an hour daily (walking, cycling, swimming, gardening.)

4. You are using medicine for high blood pressure. Mixing medicines can cause problems.

5. In the past you have been diagnosed at least once for a high blood sugar level; for instance during a pregnancy or illness.

6. Some family member has or had diabetes.

Most important if you have any questions or any reasonable doubt about your own health situation or the health of your loved ones please consults a doctor. Their expertise when looking at your signs and symptoms of diabetes mellitus will help you determine which area of treatment best fits your needs.

Please pass this on to someone that you think would benefit. You never know who you might help.

Cryptococcosis In Dogs - Symptoms and Treatment

Cryptococcosis is a fungal infection which is caused by Cryptococcus neoformans. Dogs which have acquired the infection usually suffer from severe problems that affect the central nervous system. The causative agent thrives well in soil and droppings of wild and domesticated pigeons. The feces of pigeons possess high levels of creatinine which creates a favorable environment for the fungus to flourish and survive.

The disease is transmitted through inhalation of infective spores. These spores can enter the body through cuts in the skin. Most cases of Crytpococcosis are found in cats but humans can also be infected. Dogs which are prone to the infection include those with compromised immune systems.

Cryptococcosis in dogs has been commonly observed in young adult dogs. Although it can affect any breed of dog, the cocker spaniel, Labrador retrievers, Doberman pinschers, and great danes appear to be more prone to the disease compared to other breeds.

Upon inhalation, the fungal spores take residence in the respiratory tract and even in the lungs. In many healthy dogs, the fungus stays in the lungs without creating any problem however in weak animals or those with poor immune systems as a result of disease or of excessive use steroids, the disease can progress into an advanced state which is a systemic disease characterized by pneumonia, granulomas, and other systemic symptoms.

A high percentage of infected dogs manifest neurological signs while others have vision problems, severe weight loss, and skin lesions. Other symptoms include fever, cough and nasal discharge. Lesions can be found in the nasal cavity of the dog. Aside from the respiratory system and the nervous system, Cryptococcus neoformans can affect the heart, muscles, bones, prostate, pancreas, tonsils, thyroid and adrenal glands.

There are many ways to successfully diagnose Cryptococcosis infection in dogs. The causative agent exists in large numbers in the nasal discharge and/or skin lesions and can be seen when examined under the microscope. Your veterinarian may conduct a latex agglutination test which is a type of blood test to identify the fungus. Fungal culture and/or biopsies can also be performed to identify the causative agent.

The treatment regimen involves the use of oral itraconazole or ketoconazole. It involves long term therapy that may take several months. If there is a recurrent infection, the underlying problem should also be addressed to successfully treat the infection.

There is no available vaccine which can protect your pet from Cryptococcosis. The best way to prevent infection is to keep your pets away from areas where the causative agent is endemic.

PAD - Peripheral Artery Disease and Heavy Legs - Silent Killer

PAD or Peripheral artery disease is a silent killer that silently takes the life with a painful heart attack or heart failure. This illness is one of the fasting growing problem worldwide. Those over 50 with heavy legs should be very concerned with this illness. If you have tired or heavy legs studies show that1 of 5 over 50 year old will have a heart attack. Peripheral artery disease means that there is a blockage in the artery of the legs but sadly it gets worst.

What is happening in the legs is also happening in the heart and this is where the person with PAD loses the heart. Doctors do not see the blockage in the legs on a test of the heart and this is the scary part of the illness. The only warning you may get with this illness is heavy legs. Sadly many ignore tired legs and this is a big mistake, it is often your only warning. The only answer to PAD or peripheral artery disease is to get the artery of the leg cleared and this is what most diets cannot do.

Surgery is very expensive and also causes complications. It is important to find a natural solution to reverse PAD and relief the heavy legs. Waiting is the last thing that you should do with this illness because studies have revealed that this illness causes sudden stroke and heart attack with no warning but heavy legs. The answer is a diet that can reverse the artery blockage and increase the circulation. There is a diet that has been helping many people with this without medication. The tired legs are a sign that the heart is failing.

Periodontal Diseases and Bone Grafting

Periodontal diseases are basically serious diseases, such as gingivitis and periodontitis, that attack the gums. If left untreated, these gum diseases can spread around other areas of the mouth and lead to the loss of tooth or teeth. A periodontal disease is bacterial infection that is chronic and affects both the gums and the bone that supports the tooth. It first begins with the presence of bacteria in the plaque, which is that colorless film that forms on your teeth from time to time, cause the gum to experience some amount of inflammation.

Periodontal diseases vary in degree of seriousness. The mildest form of periodontal disease, at least as far as the beginnings are concerned, is gingivitis. Gingivitis is a common problem caused by poor or inadequate oral hygiene, and it is characterized by gums that appear red and swollen. People suffering from gingivitis generally have bad breath and experience bleeding when their gums come in contact with any invading substance, including toothbrush bristles. With professional treatment accompanied with good oral care done at home, there's no reason why gingivitis cannot be reversed. But if gingivitis is left ignored and treatment for it is delayed, the disease can advance and take the form of periodontitis, another periodontal disease.

Periodontitis develops when plaque starts to spread below the gum line and the toxins produced by the plaque bacteria infect the gums. These toxins work to stimulate a chronic inflammatory response and eventually, the tissues and the bone supporting the teeth are destroyed. Pockets, the spaces found between the teeth and the gums, are then formed and deepen as periodontitis rapidly progresses. People with periodontitis experience mild symptoms but pretty soon, pain sets in and tooth or teeth loss takes place. There are different forms of periodontitis. The common ones include aggressive periodontitis, chronic periodontitis, necrotizing periodontitis, and periodontitis as a symptom of a systemic disease. Any and all of these forms of periodontitis need the immediate attention of a dentist.

Sometimes, treatment for a periodontal disease comes too late. When tooth or teeth loss has already occurred, the typical concern of patients is to get replacements. Dental implants are usually recommended. In this regard, bone grafting is often resorted to. Bone grafting is a dental surgical procedure that involves the replacement of missing bone with material from the body of the patient. Dental implants require as support the presence of bones underneath them. Bones also work to integrate implants properly and conveniently into the mouth. There are people who have lived without teeth for the longest time. These people are the ones that can benefit most from bone grafting because they are the ones that normally do not have enough bone in the right places.

Bone grafts for dental implants are usually taken from the chin or from the implants' pilot holes. Sometimes, they are taken right from the iliac crest of the pelvis and reshaped in order to fit into the mouth underneath another implant. Generally, bone grafts are either particulated or used en block, whichever is necessary for correcting a defect and for easy adaptation. Either way, tooth or teeth loss caused by a highly progressed periodontal disease can be fixed by bone grafting.

How to Cure Gallstones Naturally

The Natural Gallstone Cure

Gallstones, sometimes referred to as "gallbladder attacks", are more than a painful nuisance. Untreated, gallstones can cause jaundice or pancreatitis, and can even require surgery with complete removal of the gallbladder. Don't wait for what might otherwise be inevitable. Cure gallstones with natural and simple adjustments.

Your Gallbladder and You

The gallbladder stores bile produced by the liver. It releases bile, which is needed to break down fats, chemicals, and toxins, so that they can be flushed out of the body. If the liver becomes overworked with extra fats and poisons, the bile can crystallize and form gallstones.

Risk factors for gallstones include...

    o    body weight

    o    elevated cholesterol level

o    high-fat/low-fiber/starchy diet or fewer, larger meals

    o    rapid weight loss

o    some medications, hormone therapy, pregnancy

Symptoms of Gallstones

Gallstones can be asymptomatic until they reach a certain size. Then the condition is characterized by severe abdominal pain (described as similar to kidney stones), nausea, vomiting, fever, abdominal bloating and indigestion. Attacks are most common after large, fatty meals, especially in the evening before bed.

Medical Treatment

Gallstones are sometimes treated with an orally-administered acid, but recurrence is common when treatment is stopped. Surgery is a more common option.

Complete removal of the gallbladder, or "open" surgery, requires a week's hospital stay and an additional month of recuperation. Nearly 40% of patients experience persistent pain and gastrointestinal distress, and 20% develop chronic diarrhea. Risks of serious complications include vascular injury and bowel perforation.

The second surgical option is laparoscopic, or non-invasive. This requires a week of bed rest and another month of light activity. Many patients report residual pain and a decreased energy level up to a few months following the procedure.

It seems a bleak prognosis, doesn't it? It doesn't have to be.

Cure Gallstones Naturally

Cure and prevention of gallstones is quite simple. If you're having a gallbladder attack now, drink a full glass of water, followed with magnesium. This may help regulate bile flow. Similarly, drink a "gallbladder flush" - apple juice mixed with raw garlic and raw ginger root.

To prevent gallstones naturally...

o    Take a high quality organic herbal supplement. (see below)

o    Change your diet to high-fiber/low-fat, with lots of raw, fresh vegetables, fresh fruit, whole grains. Eliminate saturated fats, starches, and fried foods.

o    Limit dairy and cholesterol intake (milk, eggs, butter, meat)

o    Increase your intake of Vitamin C, folate, calcium, and magnesium, all of which are indicated in liver and gallbladder health.

o    Eat frequent light meals throughout the day.

    o    Avoid eating before bedtime.

What kind of herbal supplement should I take?

Therapeutic Action: You want a powerful, stimulating formula that is cleansing, healing, and strengthening to the both the liver and gallbladder. The organic herbs in the formula should work synergistically to help heal and detoxify these vital organs. The formula should work by stimulating the liver to produce more bile through the gallbladder and bile ducts. The increased bile flow allows the liver and gallbladder to flush out thousands of toxins, chemicals, antibiotics, pollutants, drugs, and cholesterol safely from the body. The formula should also dramatically reduces inflammation, pain, and even removes gallstones safely from the body.

Bell's Palsy - Virus or Stress?

Now I am no doctor, medical researcher or pollster but when I hear from over 540 people who have either had or presently suffer from the illness of Bell's Palsy and every single one of them tells me that their illness occurred during or immediately after a serious bout of stress, I would have to be seriously dim not to suggest that there is a connection.

Bell's Palsy is a condition that can strike 1 in 60 of us at any time of life. In 93% of those 1 in 60, it will only ever happen once. In the unfortunate 7% it can recur at an average frequency of around 10 years.

It is usually a temporary facial palsy condition, causing paralysis of one side of the face. In around 1% of cases, including my own, it can strike both sides of the face at the same time (bilateral bell's palsy) leaving a person with no facial expression whatsoever and in no uncertain terms, truly "wiping the smile off your face".

In 50% of cases all of the facial paralysis will disappear within 3 months. In 20% this will take up to 6 months and in another 10% it may take up to a year to achieve a complete recovery.."And what becomes of the other 20%?" I hear you shout...

The healing of the seventh cranial nerve, also known as the facial nerve, can continue at the rate of about 0.5 - 1mm per day for up to around 18 months and some consultants would say up to 2 years.

After this time, it may be necessary to employ the services of a professional facial muscle trainer to "retrain" your facial muscles to work in their originally intended way. This training can take the form of manual Bell's Palsy facial exercises or in some cases the use of an electrical stimulator, both of which can produce major improvements many years after the facial paralysis.

There are other treatments such as Botox injections and decompression surgery, that some suggest can alleviate long term symptoms such as synkenisis. Synkenisis is best described as remnants of facial paralysis or incorrect rejuvenation of the facial nerve, resulting in movements that are contrary to what was intended. In practical terms this may show as the corners of your mouth raising upon the closing of your eyelids; this being just one of a great many possible scenarios.

A number of medical consultants hold the belief that Bell's Palsy is an illness with no known cause. In fact there are over 50 different illnesses that can cause facial paralysis and it is only when these have been ruled out that a diagnosis of Bell's Palsy is comfortably arrived at. Thus it is known as an idiopathic facial palsy, meaning "of unknown cause".

The most prevalent medical belief however, is that it is the reactivation of the herpes simplex virus (HSV 1) that is the cause of the illness. This is not the sexually transmitted herpes, this is the one that gives you the odd cold sore.

It must also be said here that just because you get cold sores, that does not in any way whatsoever, mean that you will get Bell's Palsy. On the contrary, I have still never had a cold sore in my life and yet had bilateral Bell's Palsy. So, there is no more reason to worry about getting suddenly being stricken with Bell's palsy, than there is about losing another pound, dollar or euro on the weekly lottery.

The herpes simplex virus is seldom of any medical importance and as stated, is most commonly associated with cold sores. Your immune system usually cures it extremely well if ever it tries to show up.

Most of us do actually carry this virus around with us throughout our lives. 25% of people will never know they have it and never show any symptoms. 50% of people will have very mild symptoms at some point in life (not of Bell's Palsy) and 25% may be diagnosed with it upon showing some noticeable symptoms (but again, not Bell's Palsy).

When we initially contracted the virus through normal human contact as a child we may have shown no significant symptoms at all. However, once contracted, the virus remains with us in a dormant state until it can be reactivated by some future event or when we are particularly run down and our immune system has been weakened.

Without going into all of the medical terms, the resultant reactivation of the virus to cause Bell's Palsy, means that the virus has been dormantly awaiting its moment of glory on our seventh cranial nerve and upon reactivation, causes it to inflame.

The seventh cranial nerve, on its way to the facial muscles, passes through the fallopian canal, a thin bony conduit in the ear area. Because of the inflammation to the nerve, when it is in the fallopian canal it can only inflame so much before it is in effect, crushing itself.

It is when this happens that the "crushing" effect stifles its ability to transmit the impulses that are required to activate the facial muscles and achieve facial expression and therefore, a paralysis of the facial expressions on the affected side are apparent.

Now, that being the most prevalent theory, the herpes simplex virus has been noticed as present in 60-70% of those who are diagnosed with Bell's Palsy. As early as 1970, a study by researcher Shingo Murakami identified HSV-1 as the primary cause of Bell's palsy and several subsequent studies have consistently verified Murakami's research.

So, if we accept all of the above theory as being correct (and I would like to ask the obvious question about the other 30 - 40% who did not have HSV-1 present) then it is the virus that has caused the actual inflammation but surely, to be able to reactivate in the first place it must have taken advantage of our physical state.

If our immune system has been perfectly capable of keeping this virus at bay since we were a child, then what has and could, allow this virus to manifest its reactivation within us, in such a way as to cause an outbreak of this fashion.

It is therefore, to our immune system that we must look for the answers.

A perfectly healthy immune system would quite happily take care of this virus' control and restraint. Therefore it must follow that for it to break out of its cell (excuse the pun) and wreak havoc with our facial nerve, the alarm bells must draw us to the conclusion of a weak immune system at the time of the breakout.

So what depletes the strength of our immune system?

Our immune system is fuelled by the good foods and drink with which we nourish ourselves. It is aided by the sunshine and fresh air in which we bathe and breath and it is also strengthened by keeping our physical health in good order, our weight reasonable and by trying to keep a positive, calm and unworried mental outlook.

Conversely, it is compromised by a lack of the aforementioned good fuels, by illness, stress, sugar (I kid you not) and by being generally run down.

I myself, although not suffering from any illness prior to having bilateral Bell's Palsy, would definitely agree with the other components to making my immune system extremely low, stress being the main cause of each.

I was working too hard in a thankless job whilst not looking after myself properly in the food department, due either a lack of self esteem, extreme tiredness, or a feeling that there was not enough time to devote to this eating pastime. All of which are symptomatic of being very stressed.

The doctor who first diagnosed me, when I had only one side of my face paralysed, gave me a prescription which, on top of the medicinal components, advised total rest, relaxation and rejuvenation.

Having the condition for over 4 years, I have spoken to a great deal of fellow sufferers. Every single one of them truly believes that it was a build up of severe stress or in some cases a severely stressful event, that preceded their Bell's Palsy.

Most of these people, including myself, have taken a philosophical view of the entire event and had a really good look at our lives. I mean, if you cannot even count on your own smile, then one must search for some truths that you can indeed count upon. It is most certainly an experience that will change you entire life, and for the better, if you want it to.

Although it can be said with total conviction that stress reduces our immune systems and that a positive and calm mental outlook can actually boost our immune system's health and responsiveness, it is always a reactive and medicinal solution that is prescribed.

More importance should be placed on the preventative skills needed to live our lives with the awareness of stress and its early symptoms, rather than to try to correct the resultant illnesses that it will nearly always produce.

It is a known fact that between 80 - 90% of attendees at doctors' surgeries are there with a condition or problem that has its foundations firmly rooted in a build up of stress.

Is it therefore the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1) or for that matter, any other virus, infection or malady, that has caused the resultant complaint, or is it the tightening grip of the tentacles of stress upon our lives and therefore our physical immunity, that has forced the condition?

There apparently is no proven cure or protection from Bell's Palsy. Time, rest and relaxation are the only widely accepted cures.

I suggest that the instructions "To lead a life with a positive, calm and unworried mental outlook, focussed upon hope, derived from a truth that can be counted upon" should be folded into a bottle and sold as the preventative medicine for all ailments, in chemists, churches, hospitals, schools and even the workplace vending machine.

I hope that you will always have a special smile and that it will always be special, to all who have the pleasure of seeing it.
